Summer used to be the time when nothing much happened in the world. Parliaments would enjoy a long and leisurely summer recess, and news outlets would reach peak excitement at the merest hint of a heatwave and spend their remaining time reporting on weirdly shaped cucumbers. The Dutch call it ‘cucumber time’.

Oh, how we long for those days. Being a little bit bored because nothing much is going on is today’s greatest luxury. It’s a summer of petitions, demonstrations, protests and dissent for those of us who are free to march and shout. It’s a summer of violence, cruelty, injustice, injury and death for many, many of those who are not.
It is easy to lose heart in such times, to succumb to feelings of shame and guilt for not doing enough, or for simply being free and safe.

But that’s not helping anyone. While doing nothing is not an option, doing something small is significant. Repeating, or doing several small things is even better. It’s all about finding something you can do, and pacing yourself to sustain your effort.
Yes, we can look after our small corner of the world with great care and joy while simultaneously aiming our compassion and support at the wider world.
The two are not mutually exclusive.

So, enjoy all that is good in the world, if only to remind yourself why you must make yourself heard. By recognising the beauty in the world, we can find the inspiration to be better and do better.
And remember peeps, eat your greens.
